These engravings are dated between 700 and 800 AD, from the time of Wari culture. On this visit (petrogliphs) here will give us the opportunity to explore the numerous stones and rocks and their different meanings.

Lunch in Aplao located in Majes valley where will have a very nice spot of the Castilla castle it’s a gigantic rocks look like a castle.

After that we will arrive to Chuquibamba, which is know for its cheese and avocado, here we will have the option to visit  a little museum dedicated to the local pre-Incan culture Pachanas.

After Chuquibamba we will be over 4700 meters above sea level, where there is an amazing view over snowy Coropuna 6425m above sea level.

Just behind the lagoon of Pallarcocha we catch the best spot, representative of the south Peruvians Andes. It is important to note that snowy Coropuna is the tallest volcano in Peru.

For the old Incas it was the APU, the most important holy mountain in the south of Peru.

Finally arrive to Cotahuasi (2600m above sea level) about 11 hours ride.

Cotahuasi is the Capital of the Union and where we will spend the night at local hostel.

Second Day.-  Cotahuasi – Sipia – Chaupo

7:00 a.m.our breakfast, really this trek is in most cases desert, but there is a geological richness to be observed. The climate will be rather hot, as the region is not high around (2000m above sea level). We use a donkey as transport for the drink water, camping equipments and meals and one horseman.

Then we will continue crossing the Cotahuasi River over the bridges of Cuyao and Sipia.

Then we will start our 4 hours hike, passing the waterfalls of Sipia with its 150m cascade.

It is amazing to watch and listen to the battle roaring between the water and rocks, as the water with  its erosive powers step by step washes the rock away, creating an enormous gorge with a depth of 3535m. Here it is worth mentioning that Colca Canyon has a depth of 3217m, therefore Cotahuasi is 318m deeper.

After to enjoy of the falls and the canyon, we will continue to the little villages of Chaupo,on our way there we will pass by some fantastic countryside, including the red Canyon that receives its name from its red stone colour, called arcilla, beside to cross through the natural tunnel.

Chaupo is located in the left margin of the canyon.

The temperature here oscillates between 25-30 degrees.

Hiking time between Sipia Waterfall to the valley Chaupo, is 3 hours.

We will have a short stop in the Oasis of Chaupo, where apples, oranges and grapes are grown and the local wine is produced. (box lunch)

We will spend the night at local home.

In the background, in purple hues, against the crystal blue sky, rears mount Escribano, Chila, separating the valley from the Colca Canyon. Dominating all are the eternally-white Coropuna and Solimana volcanoes. Finally arrive to Andagua (3700m above sea level)
